T2
T2 was a site-specific performance that used the body, sound and an elevated large glass window to place the audience in an inside/ outside relationship with the top of a 60 ft high, 150 year-old, London Plane tree and two people ascending to it. T2 consequently brought about in the audience a dual state that was at once of suspense and of meditation, while witnessing the two people climbing this tree in real-time. The sound, which the audience listened to via headphones, provided a spoken-word soundtrack that hinted at the negotiations the two people went through to gain permission to climb this tree, interweaved with reflective snippets of intimate conversations between the two. Thereby suggesting also a relationship that grew from this shared experience of ascending the tree together. The window was covered by a curtain, perhaps similar to the theatre and cinema curtain, removed at the start and replaced at the end, revealing and concealing the view from the window.
The performance title T2 borrows from the marking of that specific London Plane Tree as T2 on the Tree Protection Order Map containing all the trees in Goldsmiths University grounds. All tree are numerically marked. T2 is situated just outside the Professor Stuart Hall building in the campus Green, by the large elevated square window where the audience watched.
