DRAWING AS EXPANDED PRACTICE

A course I developed and delivered at City and Guilds of London Art School initially as an eight-week evening course (Oct-Dec 2024). It since is being  developed to take other iterations such as a five-day intensive for the Summer School 2025 and in abridged form for the MA Fine Art.

DaEP sessions take drawing in its rawest sense and explore ways to connect with it to understand, record and reframe being in the world. It takes drawing as a process and not as a fixed outcome; and expand it in the direction of movement, sculpture, writing and performance. The focus at DaEP sessions is on the importance of creative experimentation as we engage with a range of materials, sites, processes and ideas. The possibilities of drawing as a language, as a way of thinking and as a way of imagining a world are encouraged and explored.

Documentation of the short course are available on my instagram page here.

DaEP has been  structured by posing a series of propositions devised to ignite curiosity for exploration and for thinking through making. The course aims to create a space where participants develop their  own definitions of what drawing is for them, free of expectation, judgement, or conceptually accepted norms. We use methods and materials that may not be immediately associated with drawing in its most traditional sense. Some of these methods include walking, asemic writing, sensorial mark-making, choreographic scores and others.

DaEP guiding questions:

  • How do we understand subject, tools and surface in relation to drawing in an expanded field?

  • How does drawing interact with other media? Sculpture, performance, photography, installation, writing.

  • How can we relate to and use drawing if understood not only to capture appearance and not only as form of representation, but as way of animating thought? What changes?

  • What doesn't look like a drawing and is a drawing?
