FEELING THE GAPS WALKING TOUR

Created in 2020 by Ana Vicente and Ayșe Koklu, this project constituted a practice-based inquiry aiming to research the relation between meditative walking, creativity and critical learning, in the context of the imposed measures of social distancing and lockdown due to the global covid-19 pandemic. Having been radically restricted in our ability to be together in person and as a group in a physical space and responding to the general pressured need for continuing ’as normal’, an in-between space was felt between a before and an after. As a result, we designed two practices as tools for users to cultivate thinking, imagining, healing and being at this very specific moment in time. The two practices each derive from Koklu’s and mine individual experience and research interests within the common themes of walking/ moving and writing. Therefore, they are at the same time complementary but also independent of one another and can be practiced on their own.

In the spirit of public pedagogies, we wanted our research to contribute to the production of an experiential toolkit for others to use and share, which in turn feeds back into our research. We drew inspiration from the transformative, holistic and hopeful pedagogical practices of freedom from Paulo Freire (Freire, 2014) and bell hooks (hooks, 1994), as well as in the feminist and anti-racist holistic embodied pedagogy developed by Roxana Ng (2018).
