JOINING


JOINING instruction

Join/ bind/ connect two or more pieces of deadwood together as a reparative and strengthening act.

This was a drop-in participatory instructional piece conceived as part of the 3-day festival Becoming Monster: What is Dying to Live,. This piece invited people to join pieces of dead wood together to create small assemblages that then became part of an altar built over the course of the festival.

JOINING draws from the grafting or graftage technique used in horticulture by which tissues of plants are joined so as to continue their growth together. The joining instruction encourages positive and reparative acts of binding, joining, connecting, caring and strengthening whereby something which is deemed no longer useful or fractured is restored and given a new purpose.

JOINING draws inspiration from and responds to Yoko Ono’s Mend Piece (1966/2018).

Becoming Monster Festival was a pan cultural celebration of death, decay, grief, fertility and life, that took place at the Wolves Lane Centre in Wood Green, North London, from the 31st of October to the 2nd of November. Organised by Sarah Rothwell with artists Elki Gullen, Ana Vicente, Dembis Thioung, Ffion Campbell Davies, Elizabeth Salazar and Esteban Card,  in collaboration with @the_emergence_network.

A dissolution and coagulation of art, somatic movement practice, quiet contemplation, music, workshops and more.
